A single statistic announced at the Bali and Beyond Travel Fair in late May 2026 captures both the strength and the structural vulnerability of Indonesian tourism in one number. Bali Governor Wayan Koster confirmed that Bali contributed Rp176 trillion, equivalent to 55 percent of Indonesia's total tourism foreign exchange earnings of Rp320 trillion in 2025. Of the 15.39 million foreign tourists who visited Indonesia that year, 7.05 million, or 45.8 percent, went to Bali. The average spending per foreign tourist in Bali was US$1,552.44.
Those are the numbers behind Bali's global reputation. They are also the numbers that explain why the Indonesian government is investing heavily in making sure they are not the only numbers that matter.
The Diversification Argument
The Indonesian Tourism Ministry's 2026 strategy is explicitly built around reducing dependence on a single destination. Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana has described gastronomy, maritime tourism, and wellness as the three development priority areas, each capable of building a distinct tourism identity for destinations beyond Bali. The Bali and Beyond Travel Fair itself, held at the Bali International Convention Centre from May 28 to 31, 2026, was designed with this in mind: its twelfth edition carried the theme "Redefining Indonesia's Gastronomic Journey: A Celebration of Taste, Cultures, and Sustainable Heritage," explicitly framing food culture as a vehicle for dispersing visitor interest across the archipelago.
Committee Chair I Putu Winastra put it directly: through gastronomy, Bali demonstrates that tourism is not only about a destination but also about culture, community, and daily life. That logic applies equally to every other island in Indonesia with a distinctive food culture, which is most of them.
International Recognition Is Arriving
The gastronomic push is already producing measurable international credibility. Indonesia received the New Destination Champion Award 2026 from La Liste in Paris, reinforcing its standing as a world-class culinary destination. In Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2026, two Indonesian restaurants made the list: August in Jakarta ranked 42nd and Locavore NXT in Ubud, Bali ranked 44th. August's pastry chef Ardika Dwitama received the Asia's Best Pastry Chef Award 2026.
Earlier, at the 19th China Travel Awards, Indonesia was named one of the Best Destinations 2025 at the country level, alongside Australia, Maldives, South Africa, Thailand, and Turkey. Bali also received recognition as one of the Best Destinations 2025 at the regional level. The awards are presented by Travel+Leisure China and involve evaluation by industry experts, tourism journalists, and public voting by Chinese travelers.
Indonesian Consul General in Shanghai Berlianto Situngkir noted that Indonesia's inclusion among the best destinations signals high recognition from international travelers for the quality of Indonesian tourism overall.
What This Means for Travelers Choosing Indonesia in 2026
The 55 percent figure tells you that Bali is extraordinary at converting visitor interest into economic value. The average spend of US$1,552.44 per foreign tourist reflects a destination that has built decades of experience into its hospitality, dining, and cultural infrastructure.
What the diversification push tells you is that the same quality of experience is being deliberately developed elsewhere. The Ministry facilitated familiarization trips to five priority destinations alongside BBTF 2026: North Sumatra, Yogyakarta, Tanjung Puting, Lombok, and Jakarta. Eastern Indonesia, particularly the Flores and Komodo corridor, sits within this diversification agenda as the destination that combines world-class marine tourism, UNESCO heritage status, and a genuinely different cultural and geographic character from Bali.
For the traveler who has already been to Bali or who is looking for the version of Indonesia that has not yet been shaped by decades of mass tourism, the infrastructure and institutional support for exploring further east is stronger in 2026 than it has been at any previous point. The economic data tells one story. The investment in what comes next tells another.
