Komodo is a year-round destination, but the conditions change significantly between seasons. Which month works best depends on what you're coming for.
The Dry Season: April to December
This is the best season for Komodo for most activities. Skies are clear, seas are calm, and underwater visibility runs 15–25 metres in most spots. Komodo dragons are active — morning treks on Rinca or Komodo Island almost always produce sightings.
The tradeoff is crowds. July and August are peak season: Labuan Bajo fills up, boats sell out weeks in advance, and popular spots like Padar Island are busy by mid-morning. Prices for accommodation and flights from Bali are at their highest.
April–June and September–October are the best compromise. Dry season conditions without the July–August rush. Boats have more availability, prices drop slightly, and you'll often have Taka Makassar or Pink Beach to yourself.
Dry Season Summary
| Month | Conditions | Crowds | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| April–June | Excellent | Moderate | Great shoulder option |
| July–August | Excellent | Peak | Book 4–6 weeks ahead |
| September–November | Excellent | Moderate | Best for mantas |
| December | Good | Moderate | Christmas week gets busy |
The Wet Season: January to March
Rainfall increases, humidity climbs, and some days bring choppy seas. This doesn't mean the park is closed or miserable — it means weather is less predictable.
Why some visitors prefer it: fewer tourists, greener landscapes, and the wet season coincides with peak manta ray feeding at Manta Point. Plankton blooms attract larger aggregations of mantas from September through March, so if that's your priority, January–March actually delivers.
The practical reality: a few days each week may see rain squalls that affect snorkeling visibility. Our captains will adjust the day's route if conditions at one site aren't ideal. Open-sea crossings can be rougher, which matters for guests prone to seasickness.
Quick Recommendation
- Best overall: April–June, September–October
- Best for manta rays: September–March
- Best value (fewer crowds): January–February
- Avoid if possible: Wet-season weather sensitivity — February and March have the most unpredictable seas
The best time to visit Komodo is ultimately the time that fits your calendar. The park has something worth seeing in every month. If you're flexible, April and September are reliable picks.
