There are no nonstop flights from the continental United States to Komodo. The journey requires at least two flights and a full travel day — sometimes two. That sounds like a lot, and it is. It's also worth it for the right traveler. Here's exactly what the routing looks like and what it costs.
The Standard Route: US → Bali → Labuan Bajo
Every American visitor to Komodo routes through Bali (Denpasar/DPS) and then takes a short domestic connection to Labuan Bajo Airport (LBJ). The Bali leg is the long one. The Labuan Bajo connection is 1 hour 15 minutes.
Step 1: US to Bali
No US carrier flies nonstop to Bali. The fastest options route through one Asian hub:
| From | Via | Approx. Total Travel Time | Airlines |
|---|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles (LAX) | Tokyo (NRT) | 17–20 hrs | Japan Airlines, United |
| Los Angeles (LAX) | Singapore (SIN) | 20–22 hrs | Singapore Airlines |
| Los Angeles (LAX) | Seoul (ICN) | 18–20 hrs | Korean Air, Asiana |
| New York (JFK/EWR) | Tokyo or Singapore | 22–26 hrs | Multiple |
| San Francisco (SFO) | Tokyo or Singapore | 18–21 hrs | Multiple |
Round-trip economy fares from the West Coast typically run $800–1,400. East Coast adds $200–400. Business class runs $3,000–6,000+ round trip.
Tip: Singapore Airlines routes via Singapore with some of the best connecting times and in-flight service in the market. LAX–SIN–DPS is a popular choice for West Coast travelers.
Step 2: Bali to Labuan Bajo
Domestic Indonesian airlines connect Denpasar (DPS) to Komodo Airport (LBJ) multiple times daily. Flight time is 1 hour 15 minutes. One-way fares: $15–45 on Lion Air or Citilink; $50–90 on Batik Air or Garuda.
Same-day connection vs. overnight in Bali: Allow at least 4–5 hours between your international arrival and domestic departure — Bali's airport is busy and requires re-clearing immigration, baggage reclaim, and re-check-in. Most US travelers overnight in Bali, which is a natural choice given the jet lag on arrival.
Total Trip Logistics
A typical US-to-Komodo itinerary looks like:
- Day 1: Depart US (overnight or early-morning flight)
- Day 2: Arrive Bali, overnight
- Day 3: Morning flight to Labuan Bajo, board liveaboard
- Days 3–6: Komodo National Park on a 3-night phinisi
- Day 7: Return to Labuan Bajo, fly back to Bali
- Day 7–8: Bali buffer + return US flight
That's a 10–12 day trip minimum to do it without feeling rushed. Americans who try to compress it further usually regret it.
Cost in USD
Realistic all-in budget for a US traveler doing Komodo properly:
| Item | Cost (USD) |
|---|---|
| Round-trip US to Bali (economy) | $900–1,500 |
| Round-trip Bali to Labuan Bajo | $60–120 |
| Indonesia e-VOA (required) | $35 |
| Bali hotel 2–3 nights | $80–250/night |
| Labuan Bajo hotel 1 night | $25–100 |
| 3-night liveaboard (mid-range) | $500–900 |
| Meals, tips, incidentals | $150–300 |
| Total per person | $2,000–4,000 |
Compare that to a comparable Galápagos trip (typically $4,000–8,000+ per person from the US) or a Tanzania safari ($5,000–15,000). Komodo delivers a genuinely equivalent wildlife experience at roughly half the cost.
Visa
US citizens need an Indonesian Visa on Arrival or e-VOA. Cost: USD 35. Validity: 30 days. Available at Bali's international airport or online at evisa.imigrasi.go.id before departure. No separate permit is needed for Komodo National Park — entry fees are paid through your boat operator.
