Labuan Bajo Travel Guide for Australians (2026 Edition)

Labuan Bajo for Aussie travellers — where to stay, eat, drink, and what to do beyond the boat. The honest local guide for 2026.

Labuan Bajo is the harbour town most Aussies fly through on the way to Komodo without paying it much attention. That's a missed move. The town has changed dramatically since 2018 — better cafes, decent restaurants, a few good rooftop bars, and enough character to justify a real overnight stop. Here's how to use it properly.

Where Labuan Bajo Actually Is (And Isn't)

Labuan Bajo sits on the western tip of Flores Island, the bigger island east of Bali in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). It's about 400 km east of Bali, 1 hour 15 minutes by flight. The town is built around a working fishing and tourism harbour, which means everything orbits around boats — including most of the restaurants, hotels, and nightlife.

What Labuan Bajo isn't:

  • A beach destination (the town itself has limited beaches; the good ones are in the park)
  • A Balinese resort experience
  • Walking distance from any major nature site (you need the boat for those)

What it is:

  • The launchpad for Komodo trips
  • A genuinely pleasant small Indonesian town with proper coffee and decent food
  • Far quieter than Bali, even in peak season

Where Aussies Should Stay

Three zones, three different feels:

Central / Harbour Side

The main strip along Jalan Soekarno-Hatta is where most action is. Walking distance to harbour, restaurants, and bars.

  • Sylvia Resort Komodo — mid-range, harbour views, AUD 80–140
  • Hotel Bintang Flores — solid mid-range, AUD 60–110
  • Le Pirate Hostel — backpacker hub, AUD 20–35 dorms

Hilltop / Western Side

Better views, quieter, requires a 5-minute drive into town.

  • Plataran Komodo Resort — premium, ocean views, AUD 250–500
  • Ayana Komodo Resort — luxury tier, AUD 400–900
  • The Jayakarta Suites — mid-premium, AUD 120–200

Eastern Side / Toward Pede Beach

More residential, fewer tourists, decent budget options.

  • Cara Cara Inn — boutique mid-range, AUD 80–150
  • Local guesthouses on Jalan Pantai Pede — AUD 30–60

For a 1-night pre-boat stay, the central zone is the obvious choice — close to the harbour for an early departure. For a longer stay or a post-boat decompression night, the hilltop zone gives you proper sunset views.

Where to Eat — The Local Picks

The food scene has improved enormously in the last 5 years.

Indonesian / local:

  • Atlantis Beach Club — fresh seafood, sunset views
  • Bajo Taco — yes, tacos in Labuan Bajo, surprisingly good
  • Mediterraneo — Italian on the harbour, reliable for groups
  • Made in Italy — pasta and pizza, decent wine list
  • Tree Top Restaurant — pan-Asian, view-driven dining

Coffee:

  • Bajo Bakery — proper espresso, decent pastries, Western breakfast options
  • Kopi Bajo — local cafe, Indonesian breakfast, fast WiFi

Local warungs (for the brave):

  • The night market behind the harbour serves grilled fish, satay, and nasi campur for under AUD 5 per person
  • RM Padang Salero Minang — Padang food, properly spicy, AUD 4–8 per meal

Aussie tip: the seafood is genuinely good — fresh-caught daily, grilled simply with local spices. Eat the fish, not the burgers.

Bars and the Harbour Scene

Labuan Bajo isn't a nightlife town, but there are decent options:

  • Tree Top Restaurant Bar — sunset views, cocktails
  • Paradise Bar — long-running spot, mixed crowd
  • Coconut Garden Marina — outdoor space, easy vibe
  • Le Pirate rooftop — backpacker scene, cheap drinks
  • Atlantis Beach Club — closest to a beach club feel

Beer is cheap (Bintang AUD 3–4 a bottle). Cocktails AUD 8–14. Wine is imported and expensive (AUD 15+ for a glass of mediocre wine).

What to Do Beyond the Boat

Most Aussies arrive, get on the boat, return, and fly out. Worth knowing what's available if you stay longer:

  • Cunca Wulang Waterfall — 1.5-hour drive inland, swimming hole, AUD 20–40 with driver
  • Batu Cermin Cave — short cave walk near Labuan Bajo, mild interest
  • Wae Rebo Village — traditional Manggarai village deep in Flores, requires 2+ days and an organised trip
  • Mirror Beach — small beach 30 min from town, quiet
  • Pulau Kelor — small island, hilltop view, easy day trip
  • Sunset at Bukit Cinta — local viewpoint over the bay, free

For a 2-night Labuan Bajo stop (excluding boat days), Cunca Wulang plus a sunset at Bukit Cinta is the typical sensible plan.

Things to Do on a Half-Day Before Departure

If you've got a half-day in Labuan Bajo before your boat:

  1. Coffee and breakfast at Bajo Bakery
  2. Pick up reef-safe sunscreen and a dry bag at the dive shops on the main strip
  3. ATM run — withdraw enough IDR for the boat tip and any bar tabs
  4. Walk the harbour — see the phinisi boats up close
  5. Lunch at a local warung
  6. Late afternoon: pre-boat hotel check-in, repack into your boat bag
  7. Sunset drink at Tree Top or Atlantis
  8. Early night — boat departs 7–8 AM

Practical Aussie Tips

  • Currency: IDR is universal. AUD isn't widely accepted. ATMs are everywhere in central Labuan Bajo; use bank ATMs (BCA, Mandiri, BNI) rather than dodgy street machines.
  • SIM card: pick up a Telkomsel or XL SIM at the airport on arrival, AUD 8–20 for 10–30 GB
  • Taxis: use Gojek/Grab apps in town; AUD 1–3 for most rides
  • Language: bahasa Indonesia is the local language, English widely understood in tourism contexts, less so in warungs and local shops
  • Power: 220V, Type C/F plugs (European two-pin). Bring an adapter.
  • Tipping: not mandatory but appreciated. AUD 1–2 at restaurants, AUD 30–60 for boat crew per guest at trip end
  • Safety: low petty crime, very safe for tourists. Keep valuables in hotel safes, standard caution at night

FAQs

Is Labuan Bajo safe for Australian tourists? Yes — very safe. Petty crime is low, violent crime extremely rare. Standard travel precautions apply (don't flash cash, secure valuables, watch your drink in bars). Significantly safer than Kuta or Seminyak for solo travellers.

How many days should I spend in Labuan Bajo? 1 night before the boat, 1 night after is the standard recommendation. Add a third day if you want to do an inland excursion (Cunca Wulang, Mirror Beach). More than 3 nights in town is unusual unless you're working remotely.

What's the best area to stay in Labuan Bajo? Central / harbour side for convenience and pre-boat departure. Hilltop side for views and post-boat decompression. Both work; central is the more practical default.

Can you use AUD in Labuan Bajo? No — Indonesian Rupiah only. ATMs are widely available; international cards work fine. Bring some cash for tipping and small purchases.
