Private Charter vs. Open Trip in Komodo: Which Is Right for You?

Both options cover the same national park, the same islands, and mostly the same highlights. The difference is in who controls the pace, the itinerary, and the experience.

Both options cover the same parks and islands. The difference is who you share the boat with and how much control you have over the itinerary.

Komodo Open Trip

An open trip Komodo — also called a shared trip or group trip — puts your group on a phinisi with other travelers. Standard boat capacity is 8–14 guests. The itinerary is pre-set and runs on a fixed schedule.

What you get:

  • Lower cost per person (you're splitting the boat with 10+ others)
  • A social atmosphere — most open trip guests are solo travelers or couples who are happy to meet people
  • A well-tested route that covers the main highlights: Padar, Pink Beach, Manta Point, Rinca Island, Taka Makassar
  • No planning required — just book a spot

What you give up:

  • Pace flexibility — the group moves together
  • Dietary customization — meals are prepared for the group
  • The ability to stay longer at a site you love or skip one that doesn't interest you

Best for: Solo travelers, backpackers, budget-conscious couples, and anyone who enjoys meeting people on the road.

Our open trip Labuan Bajo packages run as 3D2N and 4D3N options. The 3D2N Komodo trip is the most popular.

Komodo Private Charter

A private charter Komodo means your group has the entire vessel. The crew works exclusively for you.

What you get:

  • Full itinerary control — you decide where to go, how long to stay, what to skip
  • Meals cooked to your preferences
  • Privacy — no strangers on your boat
  • Flexibility on timing (wake-up time, activity schedule, pace)
  • The ability to request specific sites or extended sessions at a spot you love

What it costs more for:

  • Price is per boat, not per person. A group of 2 pays the same rate as a group of 6 — so smaller groups pay significantly more per head. A group of 6–8 makes the private charter cost-per-person much more reasonable.

Best for: Families with kids, honeymoon and couples trips, groups of friends who want a specific experience, divers with a custom site list, and anyone who values not being on a fixed schedule.

Our phinisi private charter options are quoted based on boat size, duration, and season. The KLM Dara is our flagship private charter vessel.

How to Decide

Open Trip Private Charter
Group size 1–4 4–12 (whole boat)
Budget Lower Higher per trip, better per person at 6+
Itinerary Fixed Fully customizable
Social Mixed group Your group only
Dietary needs Standard menu Customizable

If privacy, flexibility, or specific experiences (diving, photography, dietary requirements) are important — go private. If you're traveling solo or as a couple and don't mind a group setting — open trip is solid value.
