Sailing the Komodo Islands: Padar, Pink Beach, and Beyond

Padar, Pink Beach, and Manta Point are iconic for a reason. Here's what to expect at each one — and what's worth knowing before you arrive.

Most visitors to Komodo National Park see the same three photos online — the tri-colored view from Padar, the pink sand at Pink Beach, and a manta ray underwater. In person, these places hold up. Here's what to expect at each one and what's worth knowing before you go.

Padar Island

Padar Island is the viewpoint shot you've seen everywhere. Three bays — white sand, black volcanic sand, and pink sand — curve below a ridge of dry hills. The hike to the top takes 20–40 minutes depending on pace; it's steep in sections but there are steps most of the way. No special fitness is required.

The best time to arrive is before sunrise. By 8–9 AM in peak season, the trail has traffic. The light at dawn is also better for photos than midday sun.

One thing most guides won't tell you: the pink sand beach at the bottom of the Padar viewpoint is not the famous Pink Beach — that's a separate island, about 40 minutes by boat. The Padar bay has a pinkish tint to the sand, but it's a different site.

Pink Beach

Pink Beach Komodo gets its color from red coral fragments (Foraminifera) mixed with the white sand. The effect ranges from faintly pink to noticeably rosy depending on the light and time of day — morning is best.

The snorkeling directly off the beach is genuinely good. The reef is close to shore, the water is shallow enough for beginners, and fish density is high. You'll see triggerfish, parrotfish, and the occasional blacktip reef shark along the reef edge. Bring a mask even if you don't normally snorkel.

Beyond the Icons

The Komodo Islands have plenty of less-photographed sites worth the visit:

  • Manta Point — the most reliable place in this part of Indonesia to snorkel with reef mantas
  • Taka Makassar — a sandbar that nearly disappears at high tide; go at low tide for the best effect
  • Kanawa Island — quieter reef with good coral health, good for a morning snorkel before the return to Labuan Bajo

A komodo sailing trip on a phinisi typically covers all of these across 3–4 days. The routing depends on sea conditions and tides — your captain will know which order makes sense on the day.
